Assistant Managing Editor


Job Description

The Assistant Managing Editor will oversee the production of the quarterly literary journal as well as work with the managing editor to ensure the execution of TL Publishing Group’s mission and overall vision for the culture of literature.


We need someone with a passion for literature to contribute their efforts towards ensuring that we produce a quality literary journal for readers and contributors. The Assistant Managing Editor will work closely with the managing editor in developing the Torrid Literature Journal.


Please note that our editors work on a volunteer basis. All editors will be listed in the Masthead section of our website and they will receive a print copy of each literary journal as it is released. In addition, we will gladly provide letters of recommendation.


Successful candidates will have a good understanding of poetry and prose as well as a commitment to the vision / mission of the Torrid Literature Journal.


This position can be fulfilled remotely. However, our literary journal is published quarterly. Applicants must be able to donate at least a few days per month. The workflow depends on the flow of submissions. Applicants should be familiar with the general content of the Torrid Literature Journal. Please take this into account before applying. Free digital copies are available upon request.


Responsibilities:

Assign submissions between the poetry and fiction editors
Oversee the shortlist of poetry and fiction submissions and select the submissions that are suitable for publication
Collate, proof, and finalize the draft of the journal for each issue
Assist the managing editor in coordinating the exterior and interior layout of each issue
Write the opening editorial letter for each issue
Solicit for new poetry submissions when necessary
Report directly to the managing editor and provide 
updates / progress reports as necessary
Assist the managing editor with additional tasks as needed

Requirements:
Access to Microsoft Word, Excel, and Publisher
Familiarity with Submittable (or willingness to learn)
Internet connectivity & email access
Familiarity with poetry and prose
Ability to meet editorial deadlines
Excellent communication skills and attention to detail

A degree in English or past experience with editing is preferred but not required.
